3 Reasons Women Need a Career Strategy Today

Janet Zavala • May 06, 2024

Don't wait until the next piece of legislation that undermines our equality is passed.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, allowing women to open bank accounts, and apply for credit, and mortgages without a male co-signer.

In 1974, I was 6 years old. My mom, at 36, could now have a bank account in her name for the first time in her life. This opened freedoms to her and other women that they didn’t have before.

In those 50 years, women have made remarkable progress. So much so, that in my awareness and likely in the awareness of many young girls born after this time – the idea of equality of being equal to men or having equal rights or equal opportunities – has never been a question.

Certainly, there have been areas where further progress in equality was still necessary. However, the belief in equal rights for women has been unquestionable.

Since the reversal of women's constitutional rights granted by Roe v. Wade in 2022, there's been a widespread attack on women's rights. Every day, we witness outdated legislative efforts, debates in the Supreme Court, and oppressive perspectives that push women back to a time when my mother couldn't even have her own bank account.

The lack of equality, and options that my mother had, born in 1939, is becoming more and more of a reality.

Inspired by my desire to create change, I actively seek ways to empower other women to take control of their careers.

This week, I'm excited to speak to a group of professional women about the importance of creating a career strategy.

There has never been a more important time to take proactive and intentional steps in shaping a future that gives us options, as these choices are slowly being taken away from us.

Here are 3 reasons you need to create a strategy for your career, future employment, and financial stability.

Career Strategy Reason No. 1: Economic Viability Gives You Power and Access to Choices.

Just as women realized in the 1970s, when you can independently generate and control your income, you can make choices in your best interest. You can secure your financial future without relying on someone else. You can decide to leave situations that are unhealthy or dangerous.

Career Strategy Reason No. 2: Designing Your Career with Intention Allows You to Work in the Areas of Your Choosing.

When you create a career strategy, you identify and maximize your skills, talents, and resources. You can begin to choose the areas in which you want to work and do work that you enjoy doing instead of tolerating the work that you do. Personal satisfaction with your work brings a level of fulfillment that you deserve.

Career Strategy Reason No. 3: Creating a Career Strategy Gives You Positional Power and Influence.

As you begin to strategize on what’s best for your future, laying the groundwork, and taking action to achieve your goals, you become a role model for other women to do the same. At the same time, you gain positions of power, you influence change in organizations through hiring women and swaying policy changes that ensure equality for women in the workplace.

The power to shape your career and future resides within you. By recognizing your worth and exercising your ability to make choices, you can overcome the challenges that women face today.

With recent changes impacting women's choices, a career strategy is more crucial than ever.

The time to act is NOW.

Don't wait until the next piece of legislation that undermines our equality is passed.

If you're ready to make a difference and establish an empowering career strategy, I'm here to assist you in achieving your goals.
